Cystic Fibrosis Update - Bowl-For-Breath Fund-Raiser Ends November 13, 1998

Dear Friends,

This past year was an exciting one for the Pace's. Brent graduated from Ohio Northern University with a degree in Civil Engineering and is now working as an environmental engineer at the BP Chemical plant in Lima. Derik had a wonderful first year at Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio. This past summer, Derik worked at the Seven Stars Restaurant at the Worthington Inn and had a great experience. He is now in his second year at Hocking College majoring in Culinary Arts. We are very proud of both our young men and the way they are demonstrating their maturity in managing their health.

Both Brent and Derik continue to use the "ThAIRapy Vest" for postural drainage. This inflatable vest connects to a machine which uses varying air pressure and vibration frequencies to "percuss" the chest. The boys are no longer dependent on a second person to help them or on their personal physical dexterity and flexibility to perform their daily regimen. The device has accompanied them on their travels around the country for work and school. The only downside to the machine is its 30-40 pound weight!

Our boys (young men) are continuing their education and pursuing careers in their chosen fields. They are maintaining their health. When they were diagnosed with CF, 20 years ago, we had little hope they would get this far. Your dollars have enabled our boys and many other CF children to grow to adulthood and pursue their dreams. Your financial support provides the research funding that continues the advances in treatment of CF every year.

At the 11th Annual North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference, many reports were offered demonstrating the research and advance being made in CF research. Following the basic science presentations, moderator Francis Collins, MD, PhD, stunned the audience by stepping out from the podium, lifting a guitar from the shadows, and leading a song he had written especially for the occasion. We have included the words to his song "Dare to Dream" on the reverse of this letter. We hope you gain as much inspiration from these words as we have.

We are continually amazed at the support you have given our family over the last 20 years. Please continue your support by sending us a check payable to the "Cystic Fibrosis Foundation" by November 13, 1998.

With MUCH Love and Thanks,

Jim, Linda, Brent, and Derik Pace
